Kern County is paradise for thrill seekers with spine tingling activities available on the ground, in the water or high in the air.
- Rafting/Kayaking: No adventurer would dare visit Kern County and miss a chance to take on the whitewater of the Wild and Scenic Kern River. US Olympians trained here prior to the Sydney Games, and the International Canoe Federation's 2003 Wildwater World Cups left Europe for only the second time to test the mighty Kern. Its 50 miles of rapids are so challenging that Sports Afield magazine named it the number-one paddling destination in the country in 2000.
- Fishing: Fishing is open year round in Kern County. Lake Isabella and streams north of the lake leading to the Kern River are regularly stocked each spring. You can catch many varieties of fish, but the emphasis here is on trout. There’s also good fishing in the streams of the Los Padres National Forest. On the valley floor try the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area near Taft, or take a crack at catfish found in the California Aqueduct. Fishing licenses are required, except on publicized free fishing days. This includes fishing at all county-owned parks. Anglers age 16 and up may purchase a daily or annual license at most sporting goods or department stores.
- Mountain-biking: Mountain biking is a popular past time throughout the county, particularly in the Kern River Valley in the Los Padres National Forest near Frazier Park.
- Horseback Riding: There's no better way to enjoy fresh mountain air and some of the most beautiful scenery in the world than by horseback. Share the rich history and folklore of the area and enjoy the view on a variety of trails.
- Rock Climbing: If you're really interested in getting in touch with the great outdoors, try climbing in the spectacular Kern River Valley. Qualified guides are available to lead the experienced climber or instruct the beginner.
- Sky Diving: California City in the Mojave Desert and Taft in the Southern San Joaquin Valley are two of the prime skydiving locations found in the country.
- Flying: Glider pilots regularly flock to California City and Tehachapi for a chance to ride the thermals rising from the high desert. The clear, dry weather makes Kern a great place to soar with more than 350 suitable flying days every year. If you'd prefer a powered flight, aerial tours of the desert are also available in California City.
